Asian Doughnuts
June 12th, 2009 by chuck

These funky, crazy doughnuts are so much fun. They’re not a light, fluffy doughnut that you would get at you local doughnut shop. These doughnuts use no yeast or baking powder, they are soft yet chewy and with a firm texture to them. The ingredients are very simple and anyone can make this.
They do look a little complicated, but ,after you make the first one ,they go very quickly. These can be made the day before and then you cab deep fry when you want them.It takes only about a minute and a half to fry them you can make them for your guests and serve them warm.

I wanted to make something to go serve with these doughnuts. So, I decided to make a Chai tea to go with the Asian doughnuts. Chai tea is a spicy, delicious, warm tea made with aromatic Indian spices. You will find many versions of this tea on the internet. I think every family has there own version. So, I decided to make my own version also. I used cardamon seeds, star of anise, cinnamon sticks and sliced fresh ginger. This tea was perfect with the Asian doughnuts. Here is the recipe for the Chai tea that I made.

Chai Tea
8 tea bags of black tea
4 cups bottles water
4 cups milk
16 cardamon seeds ( cracked )
3 cinnamon sticks
4 star anise
8 slices of fresh ginger
In a pot add all the ingredients together. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally. Once it comes to a boil, turn down to a simmer and simmer for about 30 minutes. Strain and serve hot. Add what ever amount of sugar you would like. This tea should be sweet to help bring out the flavors of the spices.

hope everything is fine with you!
Wow! These are beautiful. The chai tea recipe sounds good, too!
I have a question about the recipe for the doughnuts. In the ingredients list, it mentions using baking soda, but in the procedure section, it mentions baking powder. Which one is the right one?
Thanks for the great tutorial!
Here I go again, thanks Memoria it’s baking soda not baking powder. I’ll get Angela to fix that.
Oh wow, such wonderful flavours!!another great recipe!
Anyone can make these, hm? Well, they look delicious and fun and like something I’d like to try with my kids. But I am sooo bad at anything that’s bread related! I’m bookmarking it anyway and I’m going to give it a try asap.
Thanks for inspiring me! : )
I love those doughnuts and yours look delicious!
Cheers,
Rosa
Sounds absolutely perfect indeed. I love Chai!
I love donuts and chai – yum! That cinnamon/sugar coating is making my mouth water!
They looking so funny
I love this winding dough! Nice picture, too!
But I fear, that there is a small mistake in the tutorial: Instead of the Instruction for deep frying, I found on the printabele card, there is written “Just before dough has finished rising place soft butter and brown sugar into a bowl and mix together. Add in the corn syrup, vanilla and cinnamon. Mix till well combined.”
WOW! These look amazing – adore the shape and the flavours you paired with them. Wish I could eat one now.
Oh my gosh!!! These look so good..I should know better than to look at food blogs when I am hungry.
We bake them yesterday, and they are great! Thanks for the recipe!
I’ve never seen doughnuts like these before. They’re very eye-catching.
The technique for shaping them, that’s how we twist cotton (thread) to make wicks for our traditional ceremonial lamps. Of course, it has to be easier with cotton than with dough.
I’ve bookmarked so many of your recipes, its time I started working on them!
The chai looks delicious. There are indeed many recipes for this. Usually, in India, we use just cardamom and ginger.
Any doughnut of any kind is a lovely thing! Love the cinnamon sugar coating.
The flavour profile will definitely make me want to try this.
It would be really handy to have them made up the day before – I can’t imagine getting up early enough to have these ready by 7:00 am!
That tea looks delicious, as do the doughnuts. As always, your photos are wonderful.
These look amazing! Sigh….I need a kitchen which I can bake in that is AIR CONDITIONED!!! ARGH! How can you do it in this heat?! I’ll just have to come back and try this on a rainy day!
Wow, these look great! I’m really wanting to my homemade donuts right now. Great pictures, thanks for posting!
they look so yummy!

I can’t believe I’ve missed so many of your delicious posts! Gotta catch up for sure. These doughnuts looks great. Better than store-bought which I am not a big fan of. My kids would love this. Thanks for the recipe!
That is the most beautiful, gorgeous, fantastic donut I’ve ever seen!
This is so beautiful! Great job!
These look absolutely delicious!
Is there a possible method to baking these instead of frying?
Oh how I love these doughnuts!
