Potato Bagel Stars
May 3rd, 2008 by chuck

I can eat bagels in the morning, afternoon and evening. Just spread a thick layer of cold cream cheese on a freshly baked bagel topped with poppy or sesame seeds and you have a delicious, warm, chewy meal, fit for a king.
Bagels look complicated and I think that’s because people are afraid of the boiling process. They have a hard enough time thinking about baking yeast breads already and now, they have to boil and bake them too. But, in fact they are very easy to make.
I wanted to do something a little different with my bagels. So, I created a potato bagel and shaped them into a star. I was thinking of calling them the Star of David bagels. But, for some reason I changed my mind. I thought the name should be more descriptive, I don’t know … what do you think?
Bagels have been around for hundreds of years and were invented in Europe. Today everyone knows what a bagel is and you can find them all over the place. New York style bagels are probably the most well known. I too, love the chewy texture with the slight crusty top on the New York bagel. Living here in the West I can’t always find really good bagels. So, I like to make my own. In my opinion, I think they are better then any bagel you could buy. I would love to hear your opinion of these bagels. Give them a try. You may never buy another bagel again.

They look fabulous. What a great idea to make them in star shapes. I think Star of David Bagels would be a fabulous idea, very apt too.
What an original shape for bagels! They look absolutely beautiful and very tempting! Thanks to the use of potato, they must be extremely smooth…
Cheers,
Rosa
It looks amazing!
I tried potato bread once before and I always look for recipe now.. to try make my own.
i’ve never ever seen a star-shaped bagel. is there a patent? you should look into that, because i’d much rather eat a star-shaped bagel than a boring round one. nicely done!
These look - and sound - amazing. The star shape really works. Lovely photos!
Awesome! I love bagels…never attempted them…your s look fabulous!
How lovely are these! Thanks for sharing Chuck.
I could eat bagels at all time as well, they are addictive.
Those begals look really good! I like the sound of a potato begal. I did not known that begals were boiled. That sounds interesting and I will have to try it sometime.
I tried the bagel recipe and it was wonderful; it remember me the year i lived in california, and this is my first bagel after 8 years! Thanks for sharing
Your photos are gorgeous! And so are those bagels. I can’t think of a clever name idea at the moment, I’m too busy drooling!
This is why I’m a simpleton when it comes to food, there is just nothing more satisfying then home-made bread…It has so much flavor, is warm, and chewy too. These bagels have a nice appearance too. Honestly I would call them David’s Star, or Bethlehem Bagels, because they really do look like a star. I have a delicious pizza recipe that I’m going to put on my blog.
These are beautiful! How fun. I actually made bagels and posted about them today too!
These look wonderful! you know, an added bonus of this star shape? All the bagels could be cut edge to edge, if you position the cutter correctly … no rerolling or scraps of dough left over! Kinda like the cut border of one is right up next to the other bagel. Neat!
Those look so good! I love bagels!
potato bagels? genius! i loves me some potato bread.
i kinda like “star or david” bagels. maybe “maccabagels”?
Yum… you had me at “thick layer of cold cream cheese.”
I haven’t tried bagels yet, but I’m not afraid of them. They’re on my to -do list! I love the star shape that you decided upon.
I have never seen bagels shaped like this:) What an interesting version! They look delicious and I am sure they are. Printing it. Thanks you!
Bagels are on my to make list- and yours inspire me. Beautiful! I love the star shape. Stellar.
Bagels in the shape of stars, I just love that idea! And yours look scrumptious, thanks!
i’ve never tried making one before even though i love bagels! very interesting shape for a bagel, i bet it tastes yummy too!
The shaping technique is very cool — thanks for the great photo tutorial!
Homemade bagels are the best! Your photos are truly making me drool!
I am so giggly right now. It’s hard to explian…
First of all, these bagels make me happy. I love bagels and the shape is so darn cute! Secondly, I don’t know if I would have the genius and patience to create these!
I’ve love making bagels (if you want to call them that) of all sorts: cheese, sun dried tomatoes and other concoctions. But they always seem to be a little lopsided, kinda odd shaped.
Maybe I’m giggly too because I’m just so darn JEALOUS at all the wonderful bread dishes you make!
I love that! I am a bagel freak and from the photos I can tell these are good with a great crust! Your photos are gorgeous!
Ok - you have convinced me to give homemade bagels a try. These looks amazing!
yumm!! i love me some bagels! sesame bagel, lightly toasted with cream cheese, sprinkling of kosher salt and freshly ground pepper on top…that’s my favorite…those look soooo good, and i love the star shape!
